What is Foley?
Everyone praises a film’s cinematography, music, and special effects. But many fail to acknowledge the art and creation that the sound effects add to the final product. Foley artists add realism any movie and give the audience the perception that the film’s sound effects were really produced at the shooting location. Whether it’s the sound of someone walking, furniture moving, a door opening or punches during an action scene, all of these sound effects are created in the studio with a variety of props during post production. These sound effects are called Foley. History of Foley Foley was originally developed for broadcasting live radio dramas in the early 1920s in various radio studios around the world. During that time, no effective recording method existed, therefore, a sound effects person had to create all of the sounds for the radio plays live. Foley is named after its pioneer Jack Donovan Foley. Jack Donovan Foley worked in the radio industry for years before being hired by Universal Studios in 1914. In 1927, Hollywood’s “Jazz Singer” was released by Warner Bros and Foley art gained recognition worldwide. Modern Day Foley Technology has evolved but the basic principles of Foley are the same. Foley artists perform on a stage in a Foley studio using props and their own bodies. Many simple Foley sounds effects are done without Foley artists - the Foley sound effects are stored electronically and performed by the post production sound engineer on a keyboard while watching the visual.
